ALEPPO – Western-backed fighters of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) clashed with al-Qaeda and other Islamist rebels in northern Aleppo and recaptured two villages on Friday.

Subsequent to fierce clashes with militants of al-Nusra Front (al-Qaeda branch in Syria) and the Islamic Movement of Ahrar al-Sham, the Kurdish-Arab alliance of the SDF seized control of the villages of Tat Mrash and Tanab in the vicinity of Azaz city north of Aleppo.

“Our forces liberated today Tanab and Tat Mrash in the northern countryside of Aleppo after clashes with Nusra and Ahrar al-Sham militants,” a spokesman for the SDF told ARA News in Aleppo.

This comes few days after the SDF units recaptured areas in northeastern Aleppo after clashes with militants of the Islamic State (ISIS), including the strategic Tishreen Dam which has been used by ISIS as a supply route between Raqqa and Aleppo for months.

“Our (SDF) campaign is aimed at liberating the entire region from all radical groups, including ISIS, al-Qaeda and other Islamists,” the source said.

The SDF has recaptured more than 220 towns and villages in Hasakah province over two months since its establishment. After announcing a new anti-terror campaign last week, the alliance regained control of several areas in the northern countryside of Aleppo.

The U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) include Kurdish units of the YPG and YPJ, the Syriac Military Council, the Arab tribal group of al-Sanadeed, al-Jazeera brigades, Jaish al-Thuwar group and Burkan al-Furat battalion.
